Bed-wetting is fairly common up to five years and sometimes beyond. In fact about 10 per cent of boys over five years old suffer from the problem. Bed-wetting (or enuresis) seems to run in the family. It may also be triggered by psychological trauma, such as the arrival of a baby, or by physical ailments, such as a kidney or bladder infection>
Bed-wetting is caused simply by a sensitive bladder that reacts to the pressure of urine, here are some suggestions you you may wish to try:
(1) reduce the boy’s fluid intake before bedtime and make sure he empties his bladder before retiring;
(2) during the day try to expand his bladder by increasing his liquid intake and getting him to refrain from urinating as long as he can;
(3) make hisĀ bed with two rubber and two cloth sheets and show him how to clean up by removing the top wet sheet and the rubber one under it – he may then understand that he will be expected to help in managing the problem;
(4) put a potty near the child’s bed for night use;
(5) be sure to reward your child for a dry night, but never threaten, scold, or make fun of him for bed-wetting. This will only add to his anxieties, which in turn will slow his rate of improvement.
